Following last year’s sold-out debut, London’s fiercest House festival is returning to Trent Park.
Part of Found’s summer festival series, 51st State explores House music’s roots with six expertly curated stages bringing you the very best in House, Garage, Disco, Soul, DnB and Dancehall from across the world. After well and truly winning over the crowds last year, we are beyond excited to announced that the Groove Odyssey Stage is back to take you on a spiritual and uplifting journey of the very best Classic, Soul, Funk and real Deep House from all corners of the globe.
Taking to the stage this year will be House legends Body & Soul (Francois K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit), Kenny Dope, Dimitri From Paris, The Basement Boys (Spen, Karizma and Teddy Douglas), Adeva (Live), Monique Bingham (Live), Bobby & Steve, Anane Vega, Neil Pierce and Lee Major.
Body & Soul began in 1996 in a warehouse in Manhattan. Driven by a fresh, open-ended music policy, the party stood out from what was going on in New York at the time, leaving the three core DJs, Francois K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit to go as deep or eclectic as they liked. Expect music that will inspire the soul and open the mind.
Brooklyn-born Kenny Dope is one of the most respected and prolific artists of our generation. He was just 15 when he began his musical career as a buyer for a local record shop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, before starting up a series of neighbourhood parties under the alias “Masters at Work”, soon to become the name of the esteemed partnership between Kenny and Louie Vega. Over the past two decades Kenny Dope has had his hands full releasing a number of tracks and DJing all over the world, demonstrating his instinctive ability to program the ultimate mix.
Dimitri From Paris has spent the past thirty years on the radio and lighting up dancefloors with his characteristically uplifting fusion of House, Disco and Soul. Aside from being the first to host a House music show in France, Dimitri has remixed everyone from Bjork to New Order as well as producing the soundtracks to fashion campaigns for Chanel and YSL, among others. Recently he’s enjoyed an incredible run in Ibiza and toured in America last June. Let’s see what he has in store for us as he takes to the 51st State stage!
True legends in the House fraternity Spen, Karizma and Teddy Douglas, aka The Basement Boys, have an incredible thirty years of production and experience under their belts. Having worked with the likes of Crystal Waters and Anne Nesby, these guys know how to turn it up. So if you like your beats heavy, soulful and truly mind-blowing, make sure you’re in on this.
Soulful House vocalist Adeva is known for her commanding vocals, but also harnesses a strong feeling for songs closer to gospel ballads. Born in New Jersey, Adeva gained fame in Australia and Europe, with her first three singles all reaching the British charts during the first ten months of 1989. She has also collaborated with House heavyweight Frankie Knuckles, and earned platinum and gold distinctions for her debut album, Adeva! Get down to see her play live on Saturday 6th August.
Since the late 90s, Monique Bingham has attracted worldwide attention for her incredible vocal skills and exemplary songwriting. Her hits with Abstract Truth such as “Flight” and “We Had a Thing” dominated the club scene well after their release dates. She also runs her own label BiggaSounds, which has released music by Black Coffee, Kerri Chandler and Jon Cutler, among others.
From warehouse parties in the eighties, to soul weekenders in the nineties, Bobby & Steve sure know how to get the party started. There is no doubt that the two have created a timeless legacy, and a chance to see them play at 51st State Festival should not be missed.
Anane Vega was born in Cape Verde before moving to New York where she developed a strong love of House music. It was there that she met DJ/Producer Louie Vega, and the two eventually married. Louie brought her on board as part of the Elements of Life collective, which has seen her perform all over the world. Alongside DJing, Anane now owns her own label, NULU, helping promote the Afrotech sound across the world.
Influential DJ, Producer and Label head, Neil Pierce has been cutting it in the industry for over twenty years, championing the type of quality soulful House music that is guaranteed to get everyone up on the ‘floor. Infused with classic House, Gospel and Dub, Neil's sets are full of a special kind of energy that will take you on a musical journey that you will have never been before.
Lee Major is a key player in the London House scene with over 20 years experience behind the decks. He has also fronted radio shows on Upfront, Flashback and Passion FM. You can check out his bass heavy sets in the clubs on his weekly radio show on HouseFM.net.
