On Saturday 11th June, Louie Vega is returning to Ministry of Sound to headline a very special date in the Groove Odyssey calendar for his birthday.
As one half of Masters At Work, the most prevalent DJ duo on the New York scene in the early '90s, “Little” Louie Vega helped define a rich and soulful type of house music that permeated through the city and beyond.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Louie grew up in a in musical family; his father was a jazz saxophonist and his uncle was was singer Héctor Lavoe of the Fania All-Stars. It was in the 80s that he started playing out in New York clubs and Bronx Block Parties, which was to heavily influenced his musical career. Fast forward to 1991, and Louie had joined Atlantic Records, teaming with Marc Anthony to produce "Ride on the Rhythm" - an instant hit that helped propel him into the musical mainstream.
Later on that year, Louie hit more success with the production team he created with Brooklyn-based DJ Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, known as Masters at Work. As part of Masters At Work, Louie has shepherded dance music down new paths with an inventive production style and imaginative feel for different musical forms. The two native New Yorkers have amassed an overwhelming body of work, and were responsible for the critically acclaimed albums "Nuyorican Soul" and "Masters At Work - Our Time is Coming". They also remixed and produced for the likes of Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Madonna, Jamiroquai, Tito Puente, India, Janet Jackson, Tania Maria, George Benson, Black Eyed Peas, Jocelyn Brown, Los Amigos Invisibles, Bebe Winans, and Earth Wind & Fire.
Constantly reinventing himself, Louie has crafted some of the most innovative singles in dance music history, "The Nervous Track", "It’s Alright (I Feel It)" and "I Can’t Get No Sleep", kick started genres like soulful house. Meanwhile he revitalised the careers of legends like Roy Ayers, George Benson and Tito Puente with his Masters At Work partnership with Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez and the amazing singer, India.
More recently, Louie dropped his epic debut solo LP, ‘Starring... XXVIII’, on his Vega Records label to critical acclaim. Split across two CDs, Louie’s debut is made up of 27 tracks and an impressive 25 collaborations and showcases his innate ability to transcend genres and boundaries, while spreading love among the way.
